Kite Runner 12

In chapter 12,"Yelda" is discussed which is the first night of the month of Jadi, the first night of winter. It is also the longest night of the year. Amir discussed how he and Hassan used to stay up late and Ali would tell them ancient tales of sultans and thieves. Amir started thinking about Soraya. Amir even started talking to her while at the flea market. Amir knew it was a controversial thing to be talking to her but he did it anyway.  She told him how she wanted to be a teacher and used the example of her servant back in Kabul how to read and write. Amir felt bad because he teased and mocked Hassan about his reading and pronunciation. She knows Amir writes which gives him the indication that he's being talked about around them. Amir gives her the stories he promised her however her father throws them away once he appears behind Amir. Baba was ok with what Amir was doing as long as he didn't embarrass Baba. Later on, during the winter Baba caught a cold and it progressed. They go to the doctor and find out Baba has cancer. In his right lung from smoking. Baba refuses Radiation and Amir is torn because he doesn't want to lose his father. His father is disgusted by how Amir hasn't changed since he was younger. Babas cancer progresses and the Afghans at marketing start complimenting his weight loss until he loses so much he looks sick. Furthermore, Baba doesn't want anyone to know about his sickness. One day while he helping someone he has a seizure and it turns out his brain is swelling. Still, he refuses to take chemo. Soraya comforts Amir and he is happy shes there. He tells Baba he wants her hand in marriage. Baba talks with her father and he accepts. Soraya tells Amir about her past so he knows he's making the right decision. He doesn't care and didn't tell her about his past(about Hassan).
