Martin Luther King Rhetorical Devices!
Device #1:
Allusion-Paragraph 2,Sentence 1-Paragraph 21,Sentence 1
1."The key term in this sentence is "five score years ago".Which refers to the Gettysburg Address which was a speech given by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.
2."This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning."
King said this with the meaning of the country coming together and he ends up referring to the song America(My Country 'Tis of Thee) by Bebe Winans in the next sentence.
Device #2:
Parallelism-Paragraph 19,Sentence 8
1." With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free on the day."
You can see that the same grammatical pattern is occurring.
Device #3:
Pathos-Paragraph 3, Sentence 5-Paragraph 20,Sentence 1
1.Key Statement: "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds".
You can see here that this statement is appealing to the American people saying that so-called acceptance/freedom they gave to the African American people is useless.
2."I have a dream that one day my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
This statement is appealing to the emotion of not only King's children but children around the nation about equality.
